The Hickman Development in Whitechapel
Buck and Hickman, originally a saw and tool makers for over 100 years, established in 1830, significantly re-developed the Whitechapel Bell Foundry; historically famous for crafting Big Ben and the Liberty Bell.
As part of the multi use development, there are offices, communal outdoor working areas and a hotel attached. With a 5,100 sq ft shared courtyard which has been created to bring outside space to all. Accessed via the reception, The Yard is fully equipped with Wi-Fi, power and lighting. Furnished with plenty of planting and seating options, there’s space to work, socialise and relax.
Europlanters were thrilled to work with Urban Planters Chelmsford on this exciting project.
Now completed, the finished courtyard has 16 large, rustic planting beds made from metal, powder coated in RAL 8018 and Iroko timber, two of which have benches with back rests attached. Two further benches were added along with a large storage bench. In addition, there are three chunky, high level tables and nine sturdy stools placed around this attractive courtyard setting.
The courtyards new design helped to ensure that the legacy of the site lives on and the former tool workshop was transformed for a new generation.
The vision was to celebrate the industrial elements of the existing building, and the final design reflected this.
